2005 Scholastic Award Winners
“Love of Learning is the Guide of Life”
On April 10, 2005, Phi Beta Kappa Cleveland held its Annual Scholastic Awards Banquet.
On Sunday, April 10, 2005, the Cleveland Association of Phi Beta Kappa recognized 117 outstanding graduating seniors from high schools across Northeast Ohio. This Annual Scholastic Awards Banquet, hosted by the Cleveland Association of Phi Beta Kappa, was held at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven. The faculty of each high school selected the Scholastic Award recipients based on academic achievement and scholarship (including maintaining a grade point average in the top 10% of the class). This Award is considered by many to be one of the most prestigious honors a high school student can receive. In addition, the Cleveland Association of Phi Beta Kappa again awarded its renewable four-year scholarship to Ms. Lucia Pizzo from Lakewood High School. And the Association again presented a second scholarship, sponsored by The Jones Day Foundation, to the winner of an essay competition, the topic of which was: “What is the relationship between a liberal arts education and democracy?” The winner was Ms. Xiaoxi “Chelsea” Feng from Solon High School.
The winners were accompanied by parents, guests, teachers, and guidance counselors during the awards ceremony. The keynote address was presented by Mr. Sam Miller, a noted philanthropist and civic leader, Co-Chairman of the Board and Treasurer of Forest City Enterprises, and fellow PBK Trustee. Sam delivered an inspirational talk that drew from his broad range of experiences, stressing the importance both of spirituality and the pursuit of education.
